Working with fundraising legend Ken Burnett



DGB Global congratulates Associate Director Luke Toebelmann CFRE MFIA, who recently played a key role in the publication of the latest Ken Burnett book: Relationship Fundraising, Third Edition (Burnett, K., Relationship Fundraising: a donor-based approach to the business of raising money, Civil Sector Press, Toronto, 2024).


Ken Burnett is one of the most well-known and influential fundraising identities in the world. He is an icon of the fundraising profession. Ken has been instrumental in the raising of significant funds for many causes worldwide, in various capacities – as a fundraising director, consultant, advisory board member and as a mentor – but he rose to prominence in the early 1990s as a leading voice for the relationship-centred approach to fundraising.


Most notably, Ken published the first edition of Relationship Fundraising in 1992, which has become a much-cited, quoted and referenced book for fundraisers and for-purpose leaders over the last three decades: the ….for fundraisers, you might say!


Becoming a highly sought after keynote speaker at fundraising conferences around the world. In 1994 Ken met DGB Global Partner Peter Dalton, who at that time was National Chair of the Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA). Fast forward 30 years, Peter introduced Luke, the winner of FIA’s Australia 2021 Young Fundraiser of the Year award to Ken. When the two met in the UK last year, Ken asked Luke to review some content of Relationship Fundraising III.

 

In his acknowledgements, Ken thanks Luke for “invaluable support in ensuring the final edition of this book is relevant and appropriate for a contemporary audience.” The author goes on to thank Peter Dalton, “not least for introducing me to Luke and for teaching and inspiring him so effectively that, regardless of youth and location, he could be so helpful to me. Also for Peter’s help with this book and other projects over several decades.”
