James has been working in the non-profit industry for over 20 years. He has worked internationally across a range of areas including education, health and medical research, disability, the arts, international development, youth justice, child protection and First Nation’s programs in Australia.
In regards to fundraising success and impact, it would be hard to find another leader responsible for the quantum of fundraising sector advancement in recent years. Over the last decade, James had led the consolidation and expansion of what is now one of the Australian philanthropy sector’s most impactful agencies in DGB Global. Importantly, DGB has led the rise of Comprehensive Campaign methodology in mainstream non-profits outside of the advancement sector.
His academic studies encompass a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from Swinburne University. James was first accredited with the international Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) in 2008 and was named Australian Fundraiser of the Year in 2025. During his time as Chairman of the Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA) he oversaw the implementation of the nation’s Code of Conduct on professional fundraising – ensuring and enforcing ethical practice and greater transparency for all Australian donors.
Beyond his involvement in peak bodies including FIA, James also volunteers on several fronts within the sector and community more broadly. He is currently Chair of Social Enterprise Group Ltd, a contemporary, innovative youth social enterprise charity in Victoria which is breaking new ground in youth employment and social procurement. He co-founded the CEOs in Fundraising Forum series, and is a mentor to a number of emerging leaders in the sector.
James also develops and delivers best-practice training programs and frequently conducts educational roadshows across the country, not only connecting with professional fundraisers, but also philanthropists, NFP Boards and Executives to ensure exposure and adoption of best-practice standards at all levels. His formal NFP leadership courses include the ‘Emerge Leadership Program’ and he has periodically lectured at university level on the subject of volunteer leadership.
